How to understitch?
In this new tutorial, I show you how to understitch easily.
What is an understitching?
Understitching is a finishing stitch that joins the seam allowance to a piece on the wrong side of the garment. It is invisible on the right side, which is why it is used on strategic pieces such as facings, linings, or pocket bags.
Understitching offers several advantages:
- It keeps linings and facings on the wrong side of the garment.
- It gives more structure to seams, for example, around pocket openings.
- It supports bias seams, preventing the piece from distorting over time.
How to Sew an Understitch
For the English version, remember to activate the English subtitles.
After completing the assembly seam, press the seam allowances open on either side of the seam.
Then, fold both seam allowances towards the facing or lining. Sew a new line of stitching about 2mm from the assembly seam, making sure to catch the seam allowances and the facing or lining.
A helpful tip is to use matching thread for the facing piece to achieve an even more discreet finish.
