How to Install a Slider on a Zipper
What is a Zipper?
A coil zipper is a type of zipper sold either individually or continuously by the meter. Individual coil zippers are ready to use, while zippers by the meter allow for creating custom-length closures. The tape is often made of cotton or polyester, and the nylon coil chain is shaped in a spiral to facilitate cutting.
It is possible to add one or more sliders to a coil zipper by the meter. When two sliders are placed in opposite directions, it is said they are mounted "head-to-head," allowing the zipper to open in both directions. This head-to-head configuration is useful for mattress covers or accessories like bags, fanny packs, or suitcases.
What Materials Are Needed to Install a Slider on a Zipper?
- A zipper
- A zipper slider
- A pair of scissors
How to Install a Zipper Slider on a Zipper
- Prepare Your Zipper: Cut your zipper to the desired length, adding an extra 3 to 4 centimeters for margin. Ensure your cut is clean; for this, we recommend using a pair of sharp scissors.
- Insert the Slider: Open one end of the spiral chain. Hold the slider by its widest part and slide one end of the zipper into one side of the slider up to the narrowing point. Repeat with the other end of the zipper. Carefully adjust both sides of the tape so that they are aligned at the same height.
- Push the Slider: Hold the tape flat and slowly push the slider to engage the spiral. Once the spiral is engaged, pull the slider to the center of the zipper (see video).
- Trim the Tapes: Finally, trim the two ends to even them out, and you're done!
How to Install Two Sliders Head-to-Head
Follow the steps for installing a single slider twice on the same zipper, starting with one end for the first slider and then using the opposite end for the second slider.
What to Do If Your Zipper Is Misaligned
If your zipper tape is misaligned, don't worry. Simply open the rest of the zipper with the slider and then close it by passing the slider from one end to the other.
