How to create and sew an appliqué on a garment - Sewing technical tutorial

Let your creativity flow and create appliqué patches with fabric scraps

Appliqués are primarily decorative.

To make them, follow these steps:

  1. For thin fabrics, place a rectangle of fabric wrong side down on double-sided fusible web (check the manufacturer's instructions) on the pre-glued side.
  2. Iron without steam to glue the back of the fabric.
  3. View of the right side of the glued fabric.
  4. On the wrong side (paper side), draw the outline of the patches.
  5. Carefully cut out the patches.
  6. Gently remove the protective film from the paper on the back to be able to fuse the patches onto the garment they are intended for.
  7. Position the patches according to the marks.
  8. Iron the patches so that they adhere to the garment.
  9. Choose a stitch (tight zigzag or cover stitch). I recommend doing a test on an extra patch to adjust the stitch and technique.
  10. When the tests are done, start the stitch at the edge of the patch to reinforce its hold and finish the edges.
  11. Lift the presser foot at each corner to reposition the patch and continue with care. Tip: go very slowly and undo if necessary.

Any flaws will be noticeable because the patches are generally contrasting and very visible (this is the purpose of a decorative element). So don't hesitate to redo the work if needed.
