How to create and make tassel pompons - Sewing technical tutorial
The Tassel Pom-Pom is a Decorative Finishing Touch.
It is a pom-pom that is more or less long and thick, made of mercerized cotton embroidery thread or wool. It is placed at the end of a cord (as illustrated below) or attached to a support (garment, cushion, etc.) using a loop at its top. You can watch this video or find the detailed steps:

First, you will need thick thread; either mercerized cotton embroidery thread or wool threads. Use as many strands of thread as you want, depending on the desired thickness.
- Take thread, scissors, and a square or rectangular piece of cardboard or any rectangular/square object (or use a tailor’s chalk like here).
- Place a thread or the end of the strap (or cord to which the pom-pom will be attached) across the template or chalk.
- Start wrapping the embroidery thread around it, holding the end between your thumb and index finger.
- Continue wrapping (about 20 or 30 times maximum, depending on the desired thickness of the pom-pom... for the illustrated model, I did 20).
- Cut the end of the thread.
- Pull the strap cord tight so it does not come loose.
- Cut the threads at the bottom of the cardboard to open them.
- Remove the cardboard and check that your cut at the bottom is straight.
- Wrap another piece of thread around a few times to tighten the fringes just below the top of the pom-pom.
- Tie a knot to close it.
- Thread a large-eye needle (such as a knitting or upholstery needle) through the pom-pom.
- Insert the threads that have just been tied into the eye of the needle to tuck them into the pom-pom, going downward.
- Pull the threads so they are among the fringes of the pom-pom.
- Trim any "rebellious" threads that stick out.
- To decorate, I chose to add a golden touch by wrapping a golden thread around the top of the tassel.
- Just like before, finish with a knot and tuck the ends into the pom-pom with a needle.
- Fold the ends of the strap cord by making a small hem. Then secure it with a few slip stitches, reinforcing them because the pom-poms will be handled a lot.
