How to Use a Paper Sewing Pattern? Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Trace Your Sewing Pattern

To avoid cutting into your original pattern, trace your size onto a separate sheet.

  • Lay the sewing pattern on a flat, stable surface.
  • Secure tracing paper over the pattern using tape or weights.
  • Outline the pattern pieces with a pencil or fine-tip marker. Use a ruler for straight lines and a French curve for curves if needed.
  • Mark important details: darts, grainlines, notches, and other sewing guides.
  • If seam allowances are not included, add them. (For Ikatee patterns, seam allowances are included: 0.7 cm(1/4'') for baby/kids' clothes, and 1 cm (3/8'') for women’s garments and accessories.)
  • Cut out the traced pattern pieces.

    Step 2: Transfer the Pattern to Fabric

    • Place the pattern pieces on your fabric, aligning the grainline correctly.
    • Pin or use weights to keep the pattern steady.
    • Mark all necessary details, such as notches and darts.
    • Cut the fabric carefully, following the pattern lines.
