How to Use a Paper Sewing Pattern? A Beginner's Guide

It’s time to begin a new project! You have your fabric, buttons, sewing machine… and the sewing pattern! But how do you use a paper sewing pattern? Where should you begin? Follow our expert tips to successfully start your project!

Why Choose a Paper Sewing Pattern in a Pouch Format?

There are many sewing pattern formats available: PDF, paper pouch, projectable, A0, A4, and more. Each has its advantages.

Pouch sewing patterns are physical products available on our website or at haberdasheries. These pouches contain a printed A0-size pattern and a detailed tutorial in French and English. They are ready to use as soon as you receive them!

Advantages of a Paper Sewing Pattern:

  • Ready to Use – No need for printing or assembling. Just trace, cut, and sew!
  • High Quality – Printed on durable, high-quality paper for long-term use.
  • Simple & Convenient – No printer, tape, or extra tools required.

Disadvantages of a Paper Sewing Pattern:

  • Higher Cost – Due to production and shipping expenses.
  • Reproduction Needed – To reuse the pattern, it's best to trace it onto transparent paper instead of cutting the original.
  • Shipping Time – You’ll need to wait for delivery before starting your project.

In general, we recommend:

  • PDF sewing patterns are ideal for baby and kids' clothes since the pattern pieces are small and require little printing.
  • Paper sewing patterns are best for accessories and women's clothing, as they provide a more convenient and durable option.

Of course, the choice depends on your preferences and sewing needs!

How to Use a Paper Sewing Pattern? Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Trace Your Sewing Pattern

To avoid cutting into your original pattern, trace your size onto a separate sheet.

  • Lay the sewing pattern on a flat, stable surface.
  • Secure tracing paper over the pattern using tape or weights.
  • Outline the pattern pieces with a pencil or fine-tip marker. Use a ruler for straight lines and a French curve for curves if needed.
  • Mark important details: darts, grainlines, notches, and other sewing guides.
  • If seam allowances are not included, add them. (For Ikatee patterns, seam allowances are included: 0.7 cm(1/4'') for baby/kids' clothes, and 1 cm (3/8'') for women’s garments and accessories.)
  • Cut out the traced pattern pieces.

Step 2: Transfer the Pattern to Fabric

    • Place the pattern pieces on your fabric, aligning the grainline correctly.
    • Pin or use weights to keep the pattern steady.
    • Mark all necessary details, such as notches and darts.
    • Cut the fabric carefully, following the pattern lines.
